Faisalabad Pakistan is the third largest city of Pakistan after Karachi and Lahore. It was formerly known as Lyallpur, after Sir James Lyall who was one Governor of the Punjab. It is situated about 80 miles from Lahore and is known as the Manchester of Pakistan being the nucleus of the textile industry in the area. Many other industries are also concentrated here.

It is also a big agricultural market and it was known as the granary of undivided India. Pakistan’s first and the oldest Agriculture University is located here. Till the close of the 19th century the area now comprising Faisalabad Pakistan District was a vast tract of waste-land, generally known as Sandal Bar. Geographically it formed the lower half of the Rachna Doab.

The city was founded in 1890 but offers little interest to the visitors except it bazaars. The city was originally laid out in the shape of the British flag, a rectangle with a cross and two diagonals. A clock tower stands at the cross roads. Over population and encroachments on the roads and the shopping area have destroyed the beauty of the design. The city can be reached by rail and coach services from Lahore as well as from Islamabad etc. There are daily flights from Multan, Lahore and Islamabad etc. along with the Daewoo Express Pakistan bus service.
