I see Pakistan among those 13 countries of the World who have managed to preserve their cultural heritage. Not many know that the cultural city of Lahore has the largest private antique collection in South East Asia contained in a private home. The Fakir family has a great significant historical background, which played an important part in the history of Punjab. The two brothers, Fakir Sayyed Aziz ud din and Fakir Sayyed Noor ud din were the ones who served in the court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh as the Prime Minister and the Royal Physician.
Fakir Sayyed Noor ud din was among the favourites of Maharaja Ranjit Singh as he cured an acute eye disease which was spoiling Maharaja’s eye. Fakir Sayyed Noor ud din later made the largest hospital for the poor, now known as “Mayo Hospital”. Fakir Sayyed Aziz ud din was not only the Prime Minister but also an interpreter for Maharaja as Maharaja was an illiterate person.
